Overview

Days after a disputed November 23, 2025 general election whose results were never released, soldiers calling themselves the Revolutionary Armed Forces of the People seized power on November 26, 2025, halting the vote count and overthrowing President Umaro Sissoco Embaló; the military alleged, without offering evidence, that a plot involving unnamed politicians and a "well-known drug lord" had been underway. General Horta Inta-A Na Man was installed as interim president of a one-year military transition the following day, and the junta has since decreed new elections for December 6, 2026 — a vote its own transitional charter bars Horta from contesting.
